A History of Bingo

Today’s worldwide known game Bingo evolved from a sixteenth century Italian game of lottery, ‘Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia’. This game then further evolved and became very similar to modern Bingo in eighteenth century’s’ France. The playing cards, the tokens, and reading out numbers were features added by the French to the initial Italian game. By the nineteenth century Bingo was used in many European countries and pretty soon Bingo will travel to the United States. By 1940 bingo was played all over the United States.

In 1929 a salesman from New York traveled to Atlanta and saw a game called Beano being played at a traveling carnival. All players seemed absorbed by the Beano game. The game was named Beano due to the fact that players used beans to mark their cards. Edwin Lowe was fascinated by this game and presented it to his friends when he returned to New York. He added a few features and his friends were very excited by this game. Those were just the beginning for Bingo and a few years later bingo was widely known and very successful.
During one of the games someone shouted Bingo instead of Beano and Edwin Lowe decided to use this name and started to promote Bingo in New York. Pretty soon, Edwin Lowe had so many competitors that he asked for only $1 from those who want to conduct similar games and use the name of Bingo.
